FULL LIST OF THE 2012 WINNERS OF THE OFFIES 2013

500 theatre-goers, actors, writers, directors, technicians and creatives from the heart of the industry gathered on Sunday with balloons, exquisite nibbles, crushed velvet, champagne and much razmataz to celebrate the astounding achievements of independent theatres across London – from The White Bear in the back room of a pub in Kennington to the purpose built Lyric Hammersmith, from Tooting Arts Club to performances on the terrace of the National Theatre.

The Offies find the best of the best wherever we can truffle it out with astounding young actors like Thomas Coombes from Barbarians at Tooting Arts Club winning BEST MALE PERFORMANCE in the same breath as Dame Eileen Atkins won BEST FEMALE. Thomas Coombes was overjoyed and said "It's a great honour to win" while the Dame punched the air and declared "F*** the Evening Standard Awards!".

Dame Eileen Atkins went on to say later as guests celebrated in The Grand Hall. "There is a bit of snobbery [towards off-West End theatre in the UK]. There isn’t in America. Off-Broadway Awards are huge, you know. And that’s why I’m thrilled the Offies have started. Also, to see energy and youth in this audience – if you look at the Oliviers, they’re so long and boring. This was done with such panache. Off-West End is where everybody ought to start. They should start in a small way and build up. This is where people are brave."

Presenter and actor Toby Jones observed "Coming to do this is educational for me. I find out what is really happening at the cutting edge of theatre. All innovation comes from off-West End. I’m interested in making theatre, so I should be on top of where the innovation is. The stories behind most of the venues are actually as extraordinary as the plays they produce. People have different attitudes, but my own view is that you should try and stay engaged with as many things as you can. And I would love to connect with the energy that’s been celebrated here tonight. It’s an energy that anyone sane as an actor would want to be part of."

The Offies were hosted by SIMON CALLOW with fellow presenters and friends actors ANN MITCHELL, EVELYN ADAMS andTOBY JONES, director BLANCHE MACINTYRE and playwrights MARTIN SHERMAN and FIN KENNEDY.
