Located in the very heart of London where gentrification has done for most places like this we find the Calder Bookshop and Theatre. Besides their own theatre productions they put on classic film screenings, live jazz sessions and host book launches in the beautifully intimate theatre located at the back of the bookshop. It is a must-visit place on the south side of the Thames. The venue which many speak of as the beating heart of Waterloo’s cultural community also rents out rehearsal space both in their basement (which also houses a top notch blue Sauter piano) and their theatre space, both at a very affordable rate - check them out.
51 the Cut, Bishop's, London, SE1 8LZ, United Kingdom
The business was founded by the publisher John Calder who brought us the likes of Samuel Beckett, Marguerite Duras and Jorge Luis Borges over a career that spanned 50 years. In 2010 it was taken over by an ensemble of actors and directors who gave it a more overtly political slant. The shop stocks both new and second hand books, specialising in plays, politics and philosophy along with many other treasures.
