A witty musical set in a semi-barbaric kingdom long ago. All the Princess wants is to get married, but her father the King devises a devilish plan, involving a trumped-up trial that forces her suitor to choose between two doors. Behind one door lies a beautiful lady he will be forced to marry, and behind the other, a ferocious tiger that will kill him instantly. The Princess discovers the secret, but which door will she advise her lover to choose?
Adapted from the popular 1882 American short story by Frank R Stockton, The Lady or the Tiger has become a famous conundrum and an English expression for a problem that is unsolvable. This musical adaptation by Jeremy Paul, Michael Richmond and Nola York first premiered at the Orange Tree Theatre in 1975 playing to packed houses before transferring to the West End’s Fortune Theatre.
Directed by Keith Strachan, The Lady or The Tiger challenges the audience to consider the power of choice, the depths of love, and the mysterious forces that shape our destinies.
